The First Real Blogpost – social media envy

I had thought about writing the first real post about some light or funny topic which might make a few people follow my blog.
The worst part about starting a blog is that you need to aggressively push it in order to get readers.
I posted it as a status and I guess 1 or 2 people noticed it. Then I thought people might have not seen the link , so I decided to message a few friends about it. They were gracious enough to read and offer their feedback. Maybe that’s all there is to it. So now I have decided that I will continue to write and see what happens along the way.

So this blog is about social media envy.

The concept is simple. It’s 11 p.m. and you are lying in your bed and you have had your dinner and have nothing better to do.So you log onto Facebook and look at your newsfeed. You see that your peers are getting married, going on vacations , having dates , securing good jobs and enjoying their life.

It is all well until you stop and start analyzing. You overthink and unconsciously tell yourself that your peers have gone far ahead while you are still doing what you were doing a year ago. You think that you are in the same circumstances and that the world has progressed far ahead while you seem to be stuck in time.

If all of this rings a bell, then this post is for you.Let me tell you something , what you are seeing on social media is not the mirror of the society. You are seeing one side of the coin. Look at your life , you have faced both good and bad situations.Similarly all the people have both good and bad times. But people are selective in what they showcase to the world.
In short , people showcase their successes and good fortune on Facebook and Twitter and as is very evident no one talks about their failures and bad fortune. They do not talk about it because it isn’t fashionable. No one will remark how hard they tried to do a particular task and how many times they failed. Firstly , it is nothing to be proud of and secondly no one will appreciate. Moreover you might be mocked at if you post stuff like this as people might think that you are a delinquent for celebrating your failures and telling the whole world about it.

Long story short , you are just seeing the good version of people around you. When you repetitively see the good versions of everyone around you , there is an illusion that people do not have any bad or less successful versions. This illusion makes you think that you are somewhat less fortunate than others. This then leads to useless anxiety that makes you evaluate your life at 11:30 PM in the night causing you yet another sleepless night.
You get up the next day tired , worn out and exhausted thinking to yourself that nothing works according to your wishes and carry out gloomily through your day.
And the cycle repeats.

If you happen to be reading this and if this somehow relates to you , consider this frivolous effort of mine as a wakeup call to break away from these shackles. Stop over-analysing and stop comparing yourself. You are uniquely different.

As my favourite physicist Richard Feynman says,

The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool’.

So stop fooling yourself by looking at one side of the story. Instead be inspired by the struggles of successful people and try to be happy.

Hope I made some sense.
Thank you for reading 🙂

very well observed…In fact, majority of the people nowadays feel regretful by looking just one side of the coin. I think post like these will help such people to relate and make them realize that these facebook/twitter posts are just a moment of someone’s life and not their whole life. So learn from each moment your life…
