A lot has been said about this topic, I have nothing new to add. You may stop reading if you are here to find something new.
Long story short, we live in a “digitally enabled” world, most of us have smartphones and an internet connection and a freedom to use our time and devices any way we want.
From what started as a friendly way of connecting with half-forgotten childhood friends and relatives who live on different continents- social networking websites have turned into huge businesses. They directly influence how we interact with others and live our lives.
I know of people who have a Facebook account and rarely sign into it. These are wise people. A lot has been said about keeping one’s digital life in control and using social networking merely as a supplement and not as a substitute. I do not know if this is feasible.
Even if someone would want to stay away from social networking sites and apps, there will appear a reason to get back on those sites. LinkedIn, a popular professional networking platform has slowly turned into Facebook for Human Resource Managers. The quality of posts has degraded with people posting Whatsapp forwards as legit interview experiences. Facebook and Whatsapp have become second nature. Switching off the alarm in the morning is followed by checking messages, mails and notifications.
I am sure that people have had this concern at various times. Around 60 years ago, blogging was not possible but I am sure that someone like me must have written how consumption of the radio and television which started as a means of entertainment is slowly taking a major part of our day’s time.
I do not know what the future will be like. I am hopeful that we would collectively figure out a way to optimise our digital consumption habits. To do my bit, I have uninstalled a few apps from my phone. Maybe if I do not get notifications, I would not want to check my phone.
Maybe.
