The MICA Leadership series(MLS) is one of the most happening events at MICA. A lot of senior professionals from the media, entertainment, FMCG and other major industries visit the campus and give a talk about their learning and experiences with students at MICA.
One of the prominent people to recently visit the MICA campus was Mr. Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO and MD, Disney India. He gave a talk on Media Industry- Opportunities and Challenges.

Mr. Kapur recounted his journey in the world of media and spoke about issues ranging from Bollywood to content monetization. In January 2008, he took over as CEO of UTV Motion Pictures and after the integration of UTV with The Walt Disney Company (India) in 2012, he held the role of Managing Director.
Siddharth Roy Kapur shared his personal experiences in the media industry as well as the challenges and opportunities of media industry.
His insights as a movie marketing manager were very interesting. He talked about the year 2006 when two well-known movies released. The movies were “Khosla Ka Ghosla” which was an unexpected blockbuster for the public and the other movie was “Rang De Basanti” which went on to become a cult classic.
Both these films released in the same year ,but the marketing strategies employed by Siddharth Roy Kapur as the Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications for the Group ,were different. He told students that for Khosla ka Ghosla , more than 50% of the movie budget was set aside for marketing as they saw it as a huge blockbuster right from the start.He also talked about his journey with KBC and how they tried funneling the KBC audience to the popular K-serials in India.
He also talked about his current company Disney’s brand strategies. He talked about the future of live entertainment industry in India giving example of Disney’s production of Beauty and the Beast in cities of New Delhi and Mumbai and how Disney plans to expand to more cities in future and explore the live entertainment industry.
He also mentioned why certain films are produced under the UTV banner (like Haider) and other films are produced under the Disney banner (like Khoobsurat) so as to better position the film in the audience’s eyes.
At the end of the talk Mr. Siddharth Roy Kapur was presented with a sketch prepared live by one of the professors sitting in the audience.The talk was full of great learning and insight and the jam packed audience enjoyed it.
